A brand new roof garden – called The Fearless Garden – officially opened at PS 84 at 32 West 92nd Street on May 24th. The ceremonial ribbon was cut by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and City Council Member Helen Rosenthal. Both have been active supporters of the project, along with PS 84 Principal Dr. Evelyn Lolis.

The Fearless Garden will serve as a teaching space and arts center. And as a place for the community to gather.
But the primary focus is to provide a hands-on science learning environment. Students of the Upper West Side public school will get to grow fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs.

The development of The Fearless Garden has been in the works for years. Ten years in fact! It was ultimately made possible through the investments and support given by Rosenthal and Brewer.

“The beautiful new PS 84 roof garden is an investment in the education of the future. School communities thrive when families and children work together in fostering growth in their gardens—and I’m so honored to have played a role in its funding.”

“I am beyond delighted that the rooftop garden at PS 84 is opening today. School gardens offer a wonderful opportunity for young people to explore environmental science, develop a life-long passion for cultivating the earth, and experience the healing power of stillness. Introducing young people to the power and beauty of gardens is a positive for our society and the health of our planet.”

School gardens have been a part of PS 84 since the 1970s. The Fearless Garden will provide greater opportunities for outdoor exploration, environmental science learning, and allowing students to learn by doing as they are exposed to nature.
