The ceremony — hosted by Council Member Shaun Abreu — will be held at the southwest corner of West 112th Street and Broadway. Elected officials, community leaders, and members of Friedman’s family are expected to attend.Friedman spent her life in public service, with a career that included labor organizing and serving as policy director for Congressman Jerry Nadler. She also co-founded the Morningside Heights Community Coalition and played a key role in forming the New York City Labor Chorus. Working alongside others — and with help from folk legend Pete Seeger — she helped shape the chorus into a group that has since grown to more than 100 members representing 20 unions, performing in venues around the world.
Officials scheduled to join Council Member Abreu at the ceremony include Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Council Member Gale Brewer, Assembly Member Micah Lasher, and former Assembly Member Danny O’Donnell.
The co-naming will recognize Friedman’s decades of advocacy and her deep contributions to neighborhood life, labor organizing, and civic engagement.
The Morningside Heights Community Coalition will be hosting its annual holiday gathering at V&T Restaurant after the ceremony (you can RSVP here).
