Police were called at about 9:20 a.m. on Thursday about a shooting in the vicinity of 69th and Columbus Avenue. When officers arrived, they were informed that a 47-year-old man had been shot in the leg and shoulder by an unknown individual who fled the scene while the victim was transported by EMS to an area hospital in stable condition.

“I just heard probably three gunshots,” one witness told ILTUWS. He went on to describe seeing the gunman chase another individual around a car that was parked on the street. “As [he] made it right around, you know, towards the front of the car, the guy shot him.”

“And then the guy eventually dropped in between these two cars, with the person holding the gun standing over him, as it appeared to be threatening his life, ending his life,” the witness continued. “And then I think at one point he was pointing a gun, I think up at someone [in their] apartment, and then I turned the corner. Just didn’t want to watch it.”

The witness, who was at Joe’s Coffee when the violent confrontation began, was under the impression that the two individuals knew each other. “I don’t know what the argument was over.”

Police told us on a follow up phone call that the suspect fled into the subway station at 72nd and Central Park West, causing a number of service delays on both the northbound and southbound tracks.

The New York Times shared a video of passengers lying on the floor of a B train as officers searched for the suspect. Officials believe the suspect then escaped through the emergency exit in the tunnel at West 76th Street, leading police to search through Central Park. The suspect was last seen wearing a white hat, green jacket and blue sweatshirt.

A second witness we spoke with was sitting outside the nearby Starbucks when “all of a sudden, [I] hear gunshots and lots of people running. Like, okay, I don’t have a gun on me, so I’m not sticking around. So I ran into Equinox, just to, you know, it’s a safe place to be until the police show up. And I came out like 20 minutes later just to see what was going on and what actually happened. And then, you know, we came out to the scene that you see over here. It was already taped up. While I was inside Equinox, the first thing I did was contact a lawyer about seeing if I could get a concealed carry permit.”
