Bookworms, rejoice! Beloved Manhattan bookstore Shakespeare & Co. has opened its doors at 2736 Broadway (at West 105th Street). This is the store’s third NYC location and second on the Upper West Side.
The original UWS location on West 81st Street closed in 1996, and in 2018, they opened the store at 2020 Broadway between 69th and 70th streets.

Dane Neller, the owner of Shakespeare & Co., told ILTUWS back in February that he chose to open a second UWS store because the area has a “great book market with good readers who know the brand.” Not to mention, this store has close proximity to the Columbia area, which he hopes will be a draw to both students and faculty.

It also doesn’t hurt that as a corner space, Shakespeare & Co. will have prominent frontage on both 105th Street and Broadway, and will be far enough away from its other UWS location to not cannibalize their sales.
Unlike its other two locations, the 105th Street store does not have a cafe. “There are so many great bakeries and coffee shops in the immediate neighborhood that I felt no need to do that,” Neller told us.

Another Shakespeare & Co. staple you won’t find at this location is its iconic self-publishing espresso book machine. However, aspiring authors can still self-publish at their other sites.
The previous tenant at 2736 Broadway was Steps New York.

Well, the new owners opened the 2020 Broadway location in 2018, different owners closed the West 81st and B’way location in ’96.
