September Events: Arts + Music, Magic + Pony Rides, Giant Chess Tournament

We’ve gotten word of a few September events you might find interesting.

The Center at West Park (165 West 86th Street) will be hosting the third annual Evolution Festival–”a showcase of original works in theater, dance, music, comedy, and interdisciplinary performance by some of New York City’s most innovative artists”–on various dates between September 5-28. “The Evolution Festival celebrates the diverse and dynamic arts scene of NYC, providing a space for both emerging and established artists to present their cutting-edge works,” states a press release. “Attendees will experience a wide array of performances that push the boundaries of traditional art forms, creating a unique and immersive cultural experience.” To see the full schedule and to buy tickets for individual events (they all appear to be $23.18), please visit this page.

The events below were listed in Gale Brewer’s September 3 newsletter (we handpicked three that seemed interesting):

An outdoor screening of The Farewell, a 2019 comedy-drama starring Awkwafina and written and directed by Lulu Wang, will be held at the West Side Community Garden (123 West 89th Street) on Saturday, September 7 at 7:45 p.m. “Bring a lawn chair or blanket!” reads a flyer on westsidecommunitygarden.org.

The Common Ground Festival, which will come with musical performances, dance, face-painting and more, will be taking place in Morningside Park on Saturday, September 14 from noon to 8 p.m. There will also be a magic show, pony rides, games like tic tac toe and corn hole, a marching band, puppet shows, and an Afro-Congolese dance class. The free family event has been taking place since the ’90s. Learn more here and here.

A giant chess tournament will be happening at Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain on Saturday, September 14 from 10:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Even if you don’t play, it might be interesting to see, as there are apparently over a thousand players registered (with two-thousand spectators expected throughout the day). This is the 23rd annual ‘Chess in the Park Rapid Open,’ a free event hosted by Chess in the Schools. Learn more here.
