Do you have a student eager to enhance their Jewish learning? If your elementary or middle school child wants to gain a greater understanding of sacred texts and how they come alive in contemporary traditions and rituals, look no further than Rodeph Sholom School (168 West 79th Street).
As part of their Jewish Studies curriculum, Rodeph Sholom School has launched an optional course of study for students in grades 3 – 8. The “Makor” Program is designed to enhance students’ Hebrew language skills while offering the opportunity for them to engage deeply with primary documents, such as the Torah and Rabbinic texts, and explore contemporary interpretations. Through structured study, students gain a rich understanding of Jewish history, customs, and traditions and exposure to global Jewish perspectives, collaborative learning, and skill development. Makor means “source” in Hebrew, which embodies the program’s mission of cultivating a profound connection to Jewish texts, history, and culture through scholarship.
This course of study enables students to challenge themselves intellectually, building confidence as they tackle material they may not otherwise be exposed to. For example, after initial Parashat Hashavuah lessons, Makor delves into Biblical stories using original Hebrew texts. The curriculum then progresses from introductory to more advanced texts, ensuring students develop strong analytical skills and confidence when reading and understanding Hebrew.
The Makor program is crafted for breadth as well as depth of Jewish study. Students engage with diverse Jewish practices, rituals, and cultural traditions around the world, expanding their understanding of Jewish life. As students advance, they enrich their knowledge of global Jewish history and heritage.
Current students are enjoying classes dedicated to collaborative learning and working through texts with their peers. Makor encourages investigation and debate, and demands problem-solving. These skills foster students’ independence and confidence in their critical thinking. Each student’s learning is then reinforced at home with assignments to help students practice and solidify their skills. This way, the whole family can join in their child’s learning journey!
Rodeph Sholom School believes that there are numerous ways to practice Judaism and that there are as many ways to be Jewish as there are students in the school. The school welcomes families from diverse backgrounds and family structures. Participation in this program does not depend on a student’s level of religious observance, nor does it aim to influence anyone’s level of religious observance. Instead, it provides a space for exploration and meaning-making, adding to its broad appeal.
