Chalait, a popular matcha and coffee cafe, has recently opened on the Upper West Side! Chalait is a teahouse that serves its own brand of Japanese matcha in addition to espresso, sandwiches and sweet bites. The new Upper West Side location is at 461 Amsterdam Avenue, between 82nd and 83rd Streets (the former home of 2Beans).

Chalait describes themselves as a “purveyor of fine Japanese matcha green tea”.
They state: “Our goal is to share our passion for matcha and make this remarkable tea more palatable to the western world.”
Chalait has locations downtown including Chelsea, NoMad and Hudson Square, and the new cafe on Amsterdam Avenue is their first uptown spot. Some may be wondering where the name Chalait comes from. The owners say that they eventually came up with the combination of Cha (tea in Japanese) and Lait (milk in French)!
Chalait claims that “because matcha is straight, stone-ground tea leaves, matcha provides you with green teas powerful arsenal of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids in a way no other green tea can. In fact, a single serving of matcha would be the equivalent of at least ten cups of brewed green tea.”
Additionally, the cafe reports that “the powers of matcha are manifold a cancer-fighter, a fat-burner, a stress-reducer”. Café goers can expect to try items including as Matcha Lattes, Matcha Hot Chocolate, Matcha tea, and Matcha Americano.
