The Pinkberry at 2041 Broadway (between 70th and 71st streets) will be closing on September 29, a store manager has confirmed with us. A note can also be found in the storefront’s window, thanking the neighborhood for its years of patronage.
We were told that the rent is going up and the landlord has given the space to another business. We don’t know what business it will be, but we’re hoping to have the scoop on that soon.
The frozen yogurt chain has been open at this location since 2007. The chain was launched in 2005 and there are currently over 300 stores in 20 countries. There’s another Pinkberry location at 2508 Broadway (between 93rd and 94th streets).
Pinkberry was founded in Los Angeles during the height of the frozen yogurt boom. With its tart, tangy flavor and sleek, modern branding, the company quickly gained a cult following. The chain was among the first to popularize the “build-your-own” froyo experience, where customers could add fresh fruit, mochi, or candy toppings to their swirl of choice. The brand helped redefine frozen yogurt as a stylish, health-conscious dessert alternative—earning the nickname “the taste that launched 1,000 parking tickets” because of the lines that stretched out of its original West Hollywood location.
Pinkberry rapidly expanded across the U.S. and internationally throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s. It became a symbol of the era’s “froyo frenzy,” alongside competitors like Red Mango and 16 Handles. Celebrity endorsements and media coverage further propelled its image as the chic treat of the moment.
But like many fast-growing food trends, Pinkberry faced saturation and increasing competition. In recent years, the chain has scaled back its U.S. footprint, with many original locations closing due to rising rents, changing tastes, and the rise of other dessert options like bubble tea and gourmet ice cream.
“As the final day approaches, Pinkberry team members extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Upper West Side community for nearly 18 years of loyalty, joy, and sweet moments,” the manager says.
We’ll update you once we find out what’s moving into the space.
