Pearls, a Chinese restaurant, has closed its location at 796 Amsterdam Avenue at 99th Street to relocate to Hell’s Kitchen. It can now be found at 689 Ninth Avenue at 48th Street. (Thanks to Jeffrey Solis for the tip.)
If Pearls was your go-to spot and you live near the old location, unfortunately, it appears that the restaurant’s new delivery zone only goes up to West 86th Street.
We’re not sure exactly when Pearls first opened on the Upper West Side, but online reviews date back to 2007 (and some of our readers are confident it opened before 2000).
Beware – “new” location is actually just an old restaurant called Jing which bought the phone number. Jing is a fushion restaurant and the food is totally different and much worse than the old Pearls. RIP Pearls!
Pearls was at that location at least going back to 2003. We actually have a family story about it. We used to take our daughter there when she was a toddler and have an indelible memory of them having a glass of free wine sitting at each place setting, including hers. Thirsty, she took a big sip before we could stop her, then sprayed it out and said, “This is NOT water!” The waitress was embarrassed and amused at the same time. After that incident, she was always careful to check before drinking anything!
RIP to the best house hot mustard in NYC.
I remember Pearls was there in 2000, because my friend and I who lives around the corner from it order a delicious meal from there after we rehearsed for a recital we were giving the following week. : )
Pearl’s started on the Southeast corner of Broadway and 103rd St. before moving to Amsterdam. The manager, Steve, was amazing. I’m wracking my brain to remember when that was, but it was certainly in the early 1990’s, if not even earlier.
