On Thin Ice: A Close Call in Central Park

A teenager fell into the freezing cold Central Park Pond on Monday at about 2pm. A video shows the 14 year old struggling and screaming for help, while his concerned friend stood at the edge nearby.

His calls for help, along with sounds of cracking ice, caught the attention of nearby park-goers.

A man named David McFadden, who says he was just taking a walk and enjoying a hot chocolate, grabbed a wooden latter and gave one end of it to the teen to help pull him out.

While warning signs at the Pond indicate “Thin Ice,” the two teens decided to play at their own risk.

“It was scary, but he was playing where he shouldn’t have been,” said McFadden.

Police say the teen was taken to a local hospital to be checked out after the incident.
