When you’re done decking the halls with boughs of holly and tired of looking at your Christmas tree, it’s time for Mulchfest. Running through this Sunday, January 12, this New York City tradition lets you turn your tree into mulch to nourish greenery across the city. This weekend marks ‘Chipping Weekend,’ when you can bring your tree to a Mulchfest site and take home a bag of mulch for your backyard or tree bed. The Riverside Park Conservancy has also put out a call for volunteers to help with the event.

The Riverside Park Conservancy is seeking volunteers on January 11 to help “de-Christmas” the trees left for recycling. “We will be removing ornaments, lights, and getting the trees ready to chip,” reads their volunteer registration page. Those participating will help spread wood chips throughout Riverside Park, which will help nurture trees, plants, and gardens. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
The Conservancy noted that over 25,000 trees were recycled last year city-wide, and they hope to exceed that number in 2025. So, if you come across an abandoned tree on the street, consider bringing it to one of the Mulchfest locations for recycling.
Anyone with a Christmas tree is welcome to drop it off at a Mulchfest site during normal park hours.
