Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg has announced the guilty plea of 31-year-old Jamel McIver for following a 21-year-old woman into her Upper West Side apartment building and raping her in March of last year. McIver pleaded guilty to one count of Rape in the First Degree and is expected to be sentenced on December 11.

The incident happened on March 4, 2023 at about 1:20 a.m., when the woman was returning to her apartment on 64th and West End Avenue. McIver followed her into the building and pulled her into the stairwell where he raped her. “He continued threatening her during the sexual assault,” a report from the D.A.’s office adds, and “pulled the woman down multiple staircases and eventually outside the building, where he threatened her a final time, before letting her go.”
He then took off his jacket and sweatshirt before fleeing the scene.
McIver was arrested a few days later after one or more of his relatives recognized his surveillance photos and called the police, according to a report from Pix11 at the time.
Following his arrest, it was reported that McIver had fifteen prior arrests, and had been released in 2020 on the condition that he complete two years of inpatient care at a substance abuse and mental health facility.
“Today Jamel McIver was held responsible for forcing a woman into a staircase and attacking her in a horrifying act of sexual violence last year,” said D.A. Bragg. “Every New Yorker has the right to come home safely without fear, and we will continue to hold those accountable who jeopardize the safety of fellow Manhattanites. If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual violence, I urge you to please contact our Special Victims Division at 212-335-9373.”

People like this deserve hard labor while serving their sentence. Hopefully he does a minimum of 50 years breaking rocks every single day and not a day less. And at night, he becomes someone’s b***h.
I agree! And also feel that after 15 prior arrests the judge who let him out should also be held responsible and charged with a crime.
Five, not 15, arrests should automatically lead to removal from any touchpoint with civilization for the rest of the perp’s life. There’s clearly no capacity (intentional or due to mental illness), nor any desire for rehabilitation or any correction in behavior.
