Fire on 73rd Street Claims Woman’s Life

An early-morning fire on the Upper West Side has claimed one life and has left a second victim in critical condition.

Multiple reports state that a 41-year-old woman died from the fire–which was reported at about 3:15 a.m. at 175 West 73rd Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues–while a 77-year-old was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.

The two women–who were reportedly found in the bathroom of a 14th floor apartment–both suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. Some reports indicate that the younger woman may have been the 77-year-old’s caretaker.

Videos of the heavy emergency response–with over 70 firefighters and EMS personnel–were shared on Citizen.

The fire was deemed under control at about 4:00 a.m.

“The fire appears to be electrical, it may have started with a kitchen appliance, but the cause remains under investigation,” ABC News writes.
