A fire broke out on the ground floor of a seven-story building on Broadway last night, temporarily closing two businesses.

The FDNY received a call at 6:09 p.m. reporting a store fire at 2265 Broadway, between West 81st and West 82nd Streets. Twenty-one units and 79 fire and EMS personnel responded. The fire was brought under control by 6:45 p.m.

One civilian declined medical attention at the scene. A firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

The building is home to Excellence Barber Shop and Jubilee Convenience Inc. & Smoke Shop, neither of which answered when we tried to call them. Video shared on the Citizen App shows firefighters breaking into the smoke shop, though the FDNY has not officially confirmed where the fire originated. The cause remains under investigation.

A representative reached at another Excellence Barber Shop location — the chain operates three shops on the Upper West Side — confirmed that the 2265 Broadway location is currently closed, though details were limited.

ILTUWS has reached out to the Red Cross of Greater New York to determine whether any of the building’s residential tenants were displaced. A spokesperson responded with this: “It is our understanding that all residents were able to return home after the fire on Broadway. If any residents are impacted by this fire and need help with their recovery, they should call 1-877-RED CROSS (877-733-2767) and select Option 1.”
