Empellón is expanding further into the neighborhood. A new location on West 72nd Street is expected to open within the next year.

Chef, owner and James Beard nominee Alex Stupak attended Community Board 7’s Business and Consumer Issues Committee meeting on July 13 and spoke about the restaurant’s plans for a second Upper West Side eatery at 27 West 72nd Street — where Dallas BBQ used to operate.

“It’s taken me 11 years, but I’ve been creeping up diligently. We used to have only locations below 14th Street. Our newest restaurant just opened in a residential area of Waterline Square,” Stupak said.

Stupak appeared before the committee with Morris Terzi of JTRE Holdings to discuss Empellón’s application to the State Liquor Authority for a two-year liquor license. Terzi confirmed that JTRE owns the space on West 72nd Street and is the license applicant.

The newest Empellón will serve up its famous Mexican cuisine when it opens its doors. Stupak expects that to be in the second quarter of 2023.

“It’s a big space that needs a lot of love. We are excited to open.” Hours of operation will be until 10 P.M. from Monday to Thursday, 11 P.M. on Friday and Saturday, and 9 P.M. on Sunday.

The committee approved the license without objection. “We are looking forward to [Empellón’s] arrival. We are hungry,” joked committee member Doug Kleiman before clarifying for the records that the committee intends to pay full price.

Empellón’s first UWS venture opened last December at 645 West 59th Street (at Freedom Place South within the Waterline Square complex).
