When Prohibition returned to its longtime home after waiting out the pandemic, it came back in a completely new form–one true to the Upper West Side mainstay’s name: Every aspect of this legendary watering hole’s revival now authentically represents the Prohibition era of the 1920s.
Prohibition reopened at 503 Columbus Avenue (between 84th and 85th streets) in December 2021–so it’s more than likely you’ve already seen the jazzed up interior, enjoyed the company of the waistcoat-wearing staffers, and tasted the hotsy-totsy vittles and giggle water.
But there’s one thing you may have missed–and that’s because it only happens once a month.
Prohibition’s ‘Speakeasy Soirees’ take place in the bar’s speakeasy room–separated by a sliding hidden door with a peephole–and feature special off-menu plates and cocktails along with three hours of live music from a bygone era. If you’re looking for a fun and special date night idea–especially in the middle of the week–this is absolute perfection.
Each cocktail is an experience of its own, perhaps served from a smoke-filled box, a tea cup, or even a tiny bathtub.
You won’t want to pass on the light bites menu with small plates like steak crostini, jumbo lump crab cake or lobster summer rolls with a sriracha mango chutney.
And, while Prohibition’s main stage will be lit up with live music (with two shows each night), Charlie Roman and his Hot Club band will play swinging hot jazz for the special soiree guest list (which, by the way, is limited to 35 people).
While it’s not required, you’ll want to come dressed to impress, as the guest with the best attire will receive Prohibition’s 1996 Inaugural Speakeasy Token, good for a complimentary cocktail (and swanking rights, of course).
Reservations for entry are a must, and also, you’ll need to utter the secret password to get in. Secret passwords are texted to each guest at 5 p.m. on the day of the event.
The next Speakeasy Soiree takes place on Fat Tuesday, March 4 beginning at 7 p.m. Music will be from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Book a spot here!
… And, make sure to mark your calendars (and make a reservation) for April 16 and May 14!
