A male Green-winged Teal appears to be the coolest new duck in town, based on the recent volume of tweets about him.
Manhattan Bird Alert has been sharing quite a few photos of this colorful dude in Central Park over the last few days – mostly at the Pool near 103rd Street, but there’s been at least one Reservoir sighting as well.

According to allaboutbirds.org, “The little Green-winged Teal is the smallest dabbling duck in North America. The natty male has a cinnamon-colored head with a gleaming green crescent that extends from the eye to the back of the head.”
Responding to a question about their origin, MBR says the ducks “breed in Canada and pass through our area in migration, sometimes lingering for much or all of the winter if weather permits.”
So they’ve been here before. But regardless, this duck has been making some big waves.
The real question is, will he make it big like the Mandarin Duck? And will Bette Midler write a book about him?
