TWU Local 100–the New York division of the Transport Workers Union of America–added in a post on X/Twitter that the driver had an “unknown liquid splashed onto him.”
At 2AM on 107th Street this morning, one of our Bus Operators had an unknown liquid splashed onto him — this is what it’s like being a public-facing transit worker. Our new initiative to armor bus enclosures would put an end to this abuse @transportworker @MTA @NYCTBus @AFLCIO… https://t.co/UKARSYCo3f

NYPD officials told 1010 Wins that the driver was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. The suspect fled in an unknown direction and no arrests have been made.
There’s been growing concern about attacks against bus drivers and other transit workers in NYC and beyond. This week, AMNY published a report about a major transit union “calling for bulletproof compartments on buses” to protect drivers. This initiative is slated to pilot in Philadelphia.

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) of America gathered this week, alongside New York’s TWU Local 100, to demonstrate how this would work.
The TWU is aggressively moving to protect Bus Operators from all assaults and threats, including gunfire. It’s starting in Philly where buses will get bulletproof glass partitions and we will make this demand across the country.

John Samuelsen, the president of TWU International, said NYC could be the next city to get these bulletproof compartments, and in 2023, the MTA published a press release stating that it was “testing and evaluating the efficacy of a fully enclosed operator compartment prototype for bus operators designed to cover operators by providing a sturdy, physical barrier separate from the public area.”
We’ve reached out to the MTA for an update.

A better and smarter idea would be to put criminals in jail and keep them there. Wow….. what a concept on how to protect hard working law abiding people.
100:1 the attacker hadn’t paid a fare! Broken windows….
