Last week, Bill Murray was filmed reprimanding a moviegoer at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square at 68th and Broadway. He may have done so with good reason.
“Stop it!” Murray yelled at the person walking–apparently way too closely–behind him. “If you attack me like that again, I’ll step on your foot.”
The video itself didn’t show any kind of physical altercation, but the unnamed Murray fan could be heard apologizing as the star of Groundhog’s Day walked on.
According to the April 2 TikTok video–which has gone viral with over 1.9 million views, 22,000 likes and 1,700 comments–Murray was confronting a “fan who got too close.”
“That’s a physical assault you just did,” Murray said as he walked away with a security escort. “Don’t do it again. You’re not big enough to do that.”
Murray, 74, is 6’2″.
According to the New York Post, Murray was at the theater doing a Q&A session after a screening of The Friend, a 2024 film in which he starred alongside Naomi Watts.
A quick scroll through the comments section shows ample support for the duke of deadpan.
“Don’t hurt Bill Murray! He’s a national treasure!” wrote one fan.

Fans are ridiculously intrusive AND New Yorker’s walk too close to everyone.
He actually said if you “check” me like that, not if you “attack” me.
Right on Bill Murray! Tell people who aren’t from New York how to behave!
I think the name of the movie is Groundhog Day, not Groundhog’s day.
Same for the name of the holiday too.
Thanksgiving’s Day anyone?
Labor’s Day? Memorial’s Day?
