We recently discovered that Portion, an art gallery with a futuristic business model, would be opening at 2307 Broadway, between 83rd and 84th Streets – a mysterious building with a colorful history we recently wrote about. One of our tipsters, ‘Upper West Sider’, had spoken with a company rep from Portion who said they would be opening soon.
While it was originally believed that the art gallery would only be leasing the lower floor of the building, it has now been revealed by the same tipster that they will be renting the entire building, which exceeds 10,000 square feet.
The first floor will consist of gallery space, and a studio space will be on the upper floor. They’re hoping to host art classes and are currently working on getting the necessary permits to do so.
The other update we have is that the lease they’ve signed is “semi long-term”, as opposed to being a pop-up (like this one at Coco-Mat).
As described on the official website, “Portion bridges art, luxury, and crypto. Through Portion’s smart contracts and distributed technology, art and collectibles enter a free market.”
Through Portion’s decentralized exchange, collectors can “Place bids and asks in cryptocurrency for art & collectibles.”
So basically, it’s art you can buy with cryptocurrency. That’s about as well as I can explain it. Creators can also apply to be a part of Portion’s “artist community” through their website.
A lot of the actual artwork featured on Portion’s website and Instagram page is pretty futuristic looking too. If you’re into that.
We’ll provide an update once we have more info. In the meantime, read about the mysterious building this new art gallery is moving into.
