A five-story building on a prominent Upper West Side corner may be replaced by a ten-story condo building with just four apartments, and the first look at the project is now public.

The site is 100 West 79th Street, at the southwest corner of West 79th Street and Columbus Avenue, directly across from the American Museum of Natural History. The rendering was published Tuesday by New York YIMBY, which reported that GE-T Architecture Workshop designed the building and that all four of its units will be duplexes. The rendering shows a slim, rectangular building, with most of its frontage on Columbus Avenue. Its glass exterior is crossed by a grid of thin metal panels, some of which seem to jut out slightly from the facade, a pattern YIMBY compared to a Mondrian painting. An earth-toned colonnade lines the ground floor, and the building is topped by a thick white cornice and an angular black rooftop bulkhead.
It’s still early, though. YIMBY reported that permits haven’t been filed with the Department of Buildings yet, and no construction timeline has been announced.
The building is currently a rental with an alternate address of 392-396 Columbus Avenue. The retail portion of the building is currently occupied by Wafels & Dinges.
