Bacio di Latte, the Brazilian Gelato Chain, Is Coming to the Upper West Side

Bacio di Latte, the Italian-style gelato chain that got its start in Brazil, is coming to the Upper West Side, making it one of the first places on the East Coast where New Yorkers will be able to get a scoop from a brand that until recently was found only in Brazil and California.

The forthcoming shop is opening at 341 Columbus Avenue at the corner of West 76th Street. In August, our sister publication Village Reader reported that the chain was preparing its first New York City location at 287 Bleecker Street in the West Village.

Despite the Italian name, Bacio di Latte was founded in São Paulo in 2011 by brothers Edoardo and Luigi Tonolli, who trained in traditional Italian gelato-making. It’s since grown to more than 190 gelaterias across Brazil, and its U.S. shops have so far been concentrated in California, where recent openings include Montana Avenue in Santa Monica and Valencia Town Center in Santa Clarita.

According to Bacio di Latte, its gelato is made fresh every morning in its shops, and the pistachio flavor starts with pistachios sourced from Italy. Other best sellers include Belgian chocolate, salted caramel and giandujotto, served in a cup, waffle cone or sugar cone. For something richer, there’s the Ciocchino, a cone lined with Nutella or pistachio cream and crunchy nuts before the gelato goes in.

The chain also runs an affogato bar, where a scoop gets drowned in a shot of espresso, and offers Cookie & Gelato, which pairs a warm chocolate chip, brownie or Cinnadoodle cookie with a scoop. A recent limited-time flavor, Crema Positano, combined lemon custard gelato with lemon meringue cream. For at-home consumption, customers can pack two to four flavors into pints and larger containers.
