Upper West Siders hunting for a Halloween costume may not have to travel far this year. Spirit Halloween is opening a store in the neighborhood, and it’s moving into a space once occupied by a familiar drugstore chain.

The new store is coming to 1889 Broadway (between 62nd and 63rd streets), which was previously home to a Duane Reade.It won’t be the neighborhood’s first Spirit Halloween. A pop-up moved into the former Ricky’s at 112 West 72nd Street after that store closed, as I Love the Upper West Side reported at the time.
As for when it’ll open, that’s still up in the air. A Spirit Halloween spokesperson couldn’t give I Love the Upper West Side an exact date and referred us to the location page to check for updates.
Spirit Halloween stores sell costumes for adults, kids and pets, along with indoor and outdoor decorations and animatronic figures, which the company says get new releases each year. Much of the merchandise is officially licensed, and the company’s New York page name-checks franchises like Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Terrifier, Lilo & Stitch, Five Nights at Freddy’s and SpongeBob SquarePants. Spirit describes its stores as immersive Halloween destinations, complete with larger-than-life displays and jump scares.
Spirit Halloween has more than 1,500 stores across the U.S. and Canada and bills itself as the largest Halloween retailer in North America.
