We first caught wind of the impending closure from a reader who overheard two store employees discussing where they’d be transferred during the shutdown. We then reached out to Trader Joe’s corporate communications for confirmation.“On May 17th, the Trader Joe’s store at 72nd and Broadway will temporarily close, allowing the store to undergo a remodel that will improve the shopping experience for customers, and the working experience for our Crew Members,” a company spokesperson told us. “We expect this remodel to take several months to complete, and we will reopen the store as soon as we possibly can. While this store is temporarily closed, you’ll find some of your favorite Crew Members working in our surrounding stores.”
When we followed up to ask what the renovation will actually involve, the company offered a few specifics.
“We will be updating a lot, including refrigeration and vertical transportation,” the spokesperson said. “All the changes are to improve the in-store experience for our customers and Crew.”
For local shoppers, that means it’s time to start mapping out a backup plan — whether that means trekking to 93rd and Columbus or leaning more heavily on Fairway or Morton Williams. We’ll update this story as we learn more about the reopening timeline.
