In January, the owner of 2740 Broadway (at the corner of West 105th Street) filed a lawsuit claiming that Silver Moon Bakery, its longtime commercial tenant, owed more than $200,000 in rent and other fees after overstaying its lease, which reportedly ended during the spring of 2024. According to the lawsuit, the most recent rent was a bit over $13,000 per month. Court documents state the bakery’s owners stopped making payments in August 2024.

“In August, the rent was returned to us—they refused it. They stopped accepting rent.”
Norell’s business partner, Georgia Stamoulis, used to be the building’s landlord. The current landlord is Broadside Realty Group, whose president, Michael Rose, is Stamoulis’ brother. Public records show that Broadside Realty Group also owns of 244 and 246 West 106th Street.
At about 11:15 p.m. on Monday, Norell sent ILTUWS the following press release about her iconic bakery’s forthcoming closure:
“Silver Moon Bakery at 2740 Broadway, will close on Sunday, March 23. After 24 years, the owners, Judith Norell and Georgia Stamoulis, have decided not to fight the landlord’s refusal to extend the business’s lease.
“It is a sad day for Silver Moon and for the neighborhood, which welcomed the bakery’s opening on Nov. 8, 2000. SMB became a gathering place, particularly notable on Sept. 11, 2001, when customers crowded into the tiny space, comforted by the smell of baking bread. People had found a safe place in which to feel community.
“Silver Moon will always be grateful for its 24 years of community support in its efforts to create and sustain the highest standards of artisanal breads, pastries and cakes in a warm and friendly environment.”
Norell previously told ILTUWS that doesn’t plan to find a new location.
“Honestly, at my age and with the cost of new equipment, I’m not going to think about it. I don’t have that kind of money,” she told us.

Michael Rose, the landlord, also owns Broadway Cellar.
Arrested for assaulting a NY1 reporter investigating why his tenants were without heat in 2019:

Great neighbor! If you want to share your disappointment about the bakery closing, feel free to stop into Broadway Cellar to share your thoughts.
It was the only place to go for the round Rosh Hashonnah challah. The best in NYC.
This is a tragedy. I hope this dirtbag, evil landlord loses every single penny of his money and gets what is coming to him
Maybe, but the bakery was way overpriced and overhyped. They don’t know the difference between shortcake and genoise. And they were, at least to me, the embodiment of pretension.
Silver Moon know how to bake a whole wheat pullman that tasted good, and that wasn’t as soft as wonder bread and not as hard as ‘health-food al grain’. I will miss them,
